RULE OF THE WEEK....4th hole penalty area

 Hi Ladies

We are planning to highlight at least one golf rule each week, to ensure we are all on the same page and following the rules correctly.

In order to choose rules which are most appropriate to our course, I would appreciate you letting me know when something comes up that you would like us to clarify.

No surprises to say that I am going to start with a reminder about what to do on our 4th hole if you hit into the penalty area off the tee.

To start with, please note that whenever your ball finishes in a penalty area , it is important to identify where it last crossed the edge of the penalty area. You then use that point of reference to drop within two club lengths, no nearer the hole for a one stroke penalty.

Because of the way the creek is positioned on our 4th hole, we have a special local rule which allows you to hit from either side of the creek, in line with where your ball crossed into the penalty area, NOT WHERE IT FINISHED!!

Very often on the 4th, if you hit straight down the creek, your ball will enter the penalty area near the bridge. There aren't many good places to drop either side near the bridge so you might decide that the best option is to hit another ball off the tee, which would also count as your third shot.

Of course, occasionally you may hit onto the fairway well down the hole and your ball takes a lousy bounce sideways into the penalty area. In that case, again, determine the point where it crossed into the penalty area and you may drop for a one stroke penalty within two club lengths of that point.

We hope that any questions about this or any rule can be discussed or further clarified at Thursday presentations during the year.

Good golfing,

Jenny
